FFA alumni presses sugar cane to make molasses

FFA alumni in Uniontown, Mo. pressed sugar cane Thursday grown at the Perryville High School Career Center to make sorghum molasses.

This is just one step in making molasses, which is a process that is rare to see in this day and age.

"A lot of people have no idea where there food comes from at the grocery store," said alumni member Mark Kasten. "They saw it planted, and in the ground and watched it grow up there at school every day. And, they were out there interacting with it. They got to help with the stripping, and the de-heading of the cane, and everything. It was real important to me that they could do something like that. Get involved like that."

In a couple of days the alumni will make 300 gallons and sell it a local events to raise money for scholarships for graduating seniors going into the agriculture field.

Second phase construction at PCMH is underway

PERRYVILLE, MO (KFVS) - The Perry County Memorial Hospital announced the second phase of construction is underway at the hospital.

Phase two consists of finishing a new main entrance to PCMH including the front lobby, surgery waiting room, gift shop, day-time admitting department and nursing administration offices.

According to PCMH, a new parking lot surrounding the entrance will also be added.

Phase one was finished November 2010 and consisted of the new Medical/Surgical wing and state-of-the-art surgical suites. Before starting on the current phase, a 40 year old patient care wing had to be demolished.

The second phase is estimated to be finished by November 2011. Once finished, PCMH says the new facility will have over 103,000 square feet.

Red Cross helps families, businesses prepare for emergencies

Red Cross helps families, businesses prepare for emergencies

BUTLER COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - For National Preparedness Month the Southeast Missouri Chapter of the American Red Cross is calling on families, businesses, schools and organizations to take steps now to become better prepared for the next emergency or disaster.

National Preparedness Month provides the nation with the opportunity to both remember the victims and honor those who responded, and to make a renewed commitment to being better prepared for the future.

“We all must do what we can to prepare our families and make our communities ready for the next emergency” said Jamie Koehler, Emergency Services Director. “Everyone can take three key action steps to get started: build a kit, make a plan, and be informed.”

According to the Red Cross, emergency preparedness kits should include enough supplies for at least three days in case you have to evacuate.
