PCMH warns athletes to use caution when returning to fall sports

PCMH warns athletes to use caution when returning to fall sports

PERRY COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - The Perry County Memorial Hospital is urging athletes returning to fall sports to use caution when reintroducing muscles and joints that have been at rest to seasonal sports and exercise.

PCMH says a common injury athletes encounter is that of the anterior cruciate ligament, or ACL, in the knee. According to the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine, about 150,000 ACL injuries occur in the U.S. each year.

Researchers say that female athletes participating in basketball and soccer programs are two to eight times more likely to suffer an ACL injury compared to males. However, male athletes should still use caution while participating in football, soccer and other sports programs.

“The anatomical differences between men and women may predispose women to an ACL injury more so than men,” said Joseph Byrne, Orthopedic Surgeon at Perry County Orthopedics and Sports Medicine.
