Rte. 61 bridge over Apple Creek opens to traffic

PERRY COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - The Missouri Department of Transportation announced that the Route 61 bridge over Apple Creek opened to traffic on Tuesday, August 9.

MoDOT says the bridge marks the 500th bridge finished through their Safe and Sound Bridge Improvement Program. Work on the bridge began June 13.

"The speed exemplified during the Route 61 project is one of the keys to the program's success," said Southeast Regional Field Engineer Andy Meyer. "Across the state, Safe & Sound closures are averaging 40 days."

According to MoDOT, local residents have expressed their enthusiasm for new bridge by barbecuing for the contractor crews.

"Robertson Contractors is the hardest working crew I have ever seen," said local resident Russell Schumer.

Schumer added that his family postponed their vacation to watch the contractors finish the bridge.

McCaskill touts jobs in southeast Missouri

Missouri Senator Claire McCaskill was in the Heartland Monday on what she calls her Missouri Manufacturing Jobs Tour.

She toured Sabreliner in Perryville Monday morning.

As the world markets reacted negatively to Friday's unprecedented downgrade of the U.S. by ratings agency Standard and Poor's, the Dow Jones has spent much of the day down 300 or more points.

McCaskill said job growth is still possible, despite the downturn in the market.
