Almost $1 million contract awarded for Rte. T bridge replacement

PERRY COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - The Missouri Highway and Transportation Commission awarded a contract during their regular meeting on Feb. 1 to replace the Route T bridge over Saline Creek located near Route N in Perry County.

The commission says the $956,288 contract was awarded to Widel, Inc. from Blackwater, Mo.

The project will include replacing the bridge. Weather permitting, the commission says construction is expected to start in spring 2012, with completion anticipated for October 2012.

As work to replace the bridge is underway, a one-lane temporary, low water crossing with an 18-foot width restriction will be in place. The crossing will also feature a signal for traffic flow.

Work zones will be marked with signs as improvements are made. Drivers are urged to use extreme caution while in the area and plan for possible delays.

MDNR to sponsor mercury drop-off sites

MDNR to sponsor mercury drop-off sites

(KFVS) - The Missouri Department of Natural Resources is launching a statewide roundup to rid homes of mercury by sponsoring nearly 50 mercury drop-off locations throughout the state, including nine in Southeast Missouri.

The department says they are working with fire department and county health offices throughout the state to provide drop-off locations where private citizens or nonprofit agencies can leave mercury-containing instruments like thermometers, blood pressure cuffs, thermostats or switches.

According to the department, if you would like to drop off these items at a site, you should first secure the item in two zip-top plastic bags and then place it in a crush-proof sealed container, such as a coffee can, plastic butter bowl or plastic beverage bottle.

A person who is uncomfortable with transporting mercury instruments, or who has large quantities of mercury, can contact the department's spill line at 573-634-2436 to arrange a pick-up.

Bill could eliminate prescription only ordinances

(KFVS) - It's a bill that could mean anybody could walk into a Missouri pharmacy and ask for drugs like Sudafed without a prescription.

If House Bill 1328 passes, it would most likely override ordinances passed in southeast Missouri communities outlawing the sale of pseudoephedrine without a prescription.

Pharmacists have been the first to sound off about the bill saying it sounds good, but is not.

"We don't need that bill," said Mike Tullis, a Sikeston pharmacist.

He and customers at his pharmacy say prescription only ordinances changed the face of their drug stores.

"They were scary," said Peggy Lewis of Sikeston.  "A lot of meth cookers were always around trying to buy what they needed."

Tullis agrees the days before the ordinance were not as peaceful. Tullis says he had to call the police over several times a day and feared for the safety of his workers.

He says he had to play pharmacist and cop.
