MoDOT: Designated drivers are a Halloween treat

(KFVS) - The Missouri Department of Transportation says the Coalition for Roadway Safety is reminding drivers that a little planning and creativity can keep Halloween firmly in the treat category.

According to MoDOT, last year in Missouri two people were killed and 43 seriously injured in traffic crashes during the Halloween weekend. They say that of those killed and seriously injured, 53 percent were unbuckled and 22 percent involved an impaired driver.

"This weekend is a time for imagination and fun," said Leanna Depue, chair of the Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety's executive committee. "If your celebration plans include alcohol, take a few minutes to create a safe transportation plan. Who will be the designated driver? Just in case that plan falls through, be sure to add a taxi company to your speed-dial list."

MoDOT says when behind the wheel, keep special watch for children and other people who might walk onto the road.
