Mo. State Hwy. Patrol offers Halloween safety tips

Mo. State Hwy. Patrol offers Halloween safety tips

(KFVS) - Missouri State Highway Patrol Superintendent Ron Replogle is encouraging everyone to plan ahead on Halloween and offers some safety tips.

Replogle says safety is an important part of a fun Halloween. Here are some tips:

MOTORISTS

  • Motorists are reminded to pay attention for trick-or-treaters of all ages.  Young children excited by Halloween could dart in front of a vehicle. Slow down, and drive with extra caution. If you are headed to a costume party, make sure the costume doesn’t hamper your vision while you’re driving to the event! Motorists picking up and dropping off trick-or-treaters may increase the number of vehicles on the road, therefore affecting traffic patterns. Please be courteous and stay alert.

Send holiday cheer to troops with 'Holiday Mail for Heroes' program

(KFVS) - The American Red Cross will be collecting and distributing cards that send words of encouragement, gratitude and cheer to America's heroes for the holiday season.

Between Oct. 1 and Dec. 7, Americans can give something that means something by sending a card of thanks and support to members of the Armed Forces, veterans and their families.

The Red Cross is inviting the public to send messages of thanks and holiday cheer until Dec. 7 by mailing them to:

Holiday Mail for Heroes
P.O. Box 5456
Capitol Heights, MD 20791-5456

To ensure that cards are delivered on time for the holidays, the Red Cross says they must be postmarked no later than Dec. 7. Individuals are asked to refrain from sending "care packages," monetary donations or using glitter or any other kinds of inserts with the cards.

PCMH offers parents tips on recognizing speech, language disorders in children

PCMH offers parents tips on recognizing speech, language disorders in children

PERRYVILLE, MO (KFVS) - Perry County Memorial Hospital is offering tips for parents to help them recognize different types of speech and language disorders that might affect school-age children.

According to PCMH, children with communication disorders frequently do not perform on grade level because they have difficulty understanding and talking, struggle with reading and writing, misunderstand social cues, show poor judgment, have trouble taking tests, and may avoid school.

“Parents should discuss any signs of a speech and language problem with their child’s physician and request their child be evaluated by a speech-language pathologist," said Tracie Higgins, Certified Speech-Language Pathologist at PCMH. "It's crucial that children are identified and begin treatment as early as possible because summer break will only compound the consequences of a communication disorder if left untreated.”
