More retirees are taking on "Encore Careers"

(Source: MGN Online)

PERRYVILLE, MO (KFVS)- We tend to think of retirement as golfing more, taking vacations, and spending time with the grand kids. But, more retirees are choosing to forgo the relaxation for a second job.

"I've been a teacher for 30 some years," said Georganne Syler.

"I worked for the Missouri Department of Conservation, and I worked for them for just a little over 40 years," said Ed Ponder.

"I worked in the corporate world for 20 plus years," said Peg MacDougall.

After putting in decades of work, you would think people like Ponder couldn't wait for retirement.

"More or less did what I wanted to do when I wanted to do it," said Ponder.

But more and more retirees are taking on ‘Encore Careers,' a steady job after they retire.

"I still feel like I'm healthy enough and productive enough," said Ponder.

"You'd be bored to death if you stayed home all the time," said Syler.

School teaches parents how to protect kids online

(Source: MGN Online)

PERRYVILLE, MO (KFVS)- Do you know how to monitor your child's Facebook through email? Do you have Internet filters set up? Have you spoken to your child about who they talk to online.

Leaders in Perryville School District took that lesson to parents in a special workshop.

"We want to show them it can happen," said School Resource Officer, Deputy Matt Schamburg. "Technology is great but it gives predators more ways to get to your children."

"It's very nerve racking as a parent," said Jeff Steffens, a father. "You can think you are in the safest community but anybody out there can get your information."

"I just don't think you can arm yourself with enough information," said Mother, Jamie Gladdens. "There's so much out there now none of us grew up with."

'Rural Missouri' magazine announces annual Readers' Choice awards

(KFVS) - For the 12th consecutive year, the readers of "Rural Missouri" magazine have selected their statewide favorites in the publication's annual Best of Rural Missouri Readers' Choice Contest.

Last year, readers overwhelmingly approved the return of a statewide format for the contest that asks them to name their favorite eateries, destinations and activities. For this year's edition of the contest, the format remained the same. "Rural Missouri's" editors had the task of tabulating entries from readers who offered their picks in 20 categories, ranging from "Best Restaurant" and "Best Burger" to "Best Small-town Museum" and "Best Theater." A winner, runner-up and editor's choice were named in each category.
