Missouri 8th District candidates answer questions

MISSOURI (KFVS)- The special election to fill the U.S. Representative for Missouri's 8th district is just about a month away on June 4.

Missouri voters will choose someone to fill the seat Rep. JoAnn Emerson vacated.

Steve Hodges is the Democrat candidate. He has worked in the Missouri House of Representatives since elected in 2006, serving Mississippi, New Madrid, Scott and Stoddard counties.

Jason Smith is the Republican candidate. He has worked in the Missouri House of Representatives since voters elected him in 2005 and serves Crawford, Dent, Phelps and Reynolds counties.

Bill Slantz is the Libertarian candidate, and founded his own consulting company.

Doug Enyart is the Constitution Party candidate and founded his company in forestry consulting.

Heartland News sat down with each one and asked a few questions.

State Treasurer offers financial "spring cleaning" checklist

JEFFERSON CITY, MO (KFVS) - State Treasurer Clint Zweifel is providing Missourians a financial “spring cleaning” checklist.

Zweifel says he hopes Missourians will use to keep their finances in order and their property from becoming unclaimed property.

“There are a few simple steps each of us can take on a regular basis to keep our records up-to-date and our estates in order,” Treasurer Zweifel said. “It is important that we check on our accounts, safe deposit boxes, life insurance policies and wills. By making sure that our contact information is correct, our fees are paid up and changes made, Missourians can help keep their property where it belongs and avoid having to file Unclaimed Property claims to get it back.”

Here are a few “spring cleaning” tips for your finances from Zweifel:

1. Make sure your bank has your current information. If you have moved or changed your name, be sure to inform your bank.

Those filing include:

Randy J. Leible (Incumbent) - Filed Dec. 11 at 8 a.m. for Alderman, Ward 2
Douglas K. Martin (New) - Filed Dec. 11 at 8:10 a.m. for Alderman, Ward 2
Larry Riney (Incumbent) - Filed Dec. 11 at 4:05 p.m. for Alderman, Ward 1
Gary J. Schumer (Incumbent) - Filed Dec. 18 at 2:30 p.m. for Alderman, Ward 3

Perry County Middle School students elect Romney in mock election

PERRYVILLE, MO (KFVS) - Mitt Romney won the mock presidential race at the Perry County Middle School Tuesday.

More than 204 seventh grader registered to vote, studied the election process, and investigated issues important to them.

Each child had to present his/her school ID and registration card at the correct polling place to receive a presidential election ballot. The form asked students to choose between Democrats Barack Obama and Joe Biden or Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan.

Romney won with 82 votes. Obama had 61. Of the 204 eligible voters, 143 or 70 percent, cast a ballot.

"We tried to make this as close to the actual election process as possible," said PCMS teacher Karen Bahr in a press release to the media. "If the students didn't report to the correct polling place or failed to show their registration or ID, they did not get to cast a ballot."

Those who successfully completed the process were given an official "I Voted" sticker.
