Proposition filed on Mo. tobacco taxes to fund education, health

(KFVS) - A group of organizations and individuals led by the American Cancer Society have filed a proposition on tobacco taxes to provide funding for public education, higher education and public health in Missouri.

The coalition sponsoring the measure is made up of medical and public health professionals, education groups, business leaders and community leaders.

“We are pleased this measure has potential to help school districts deal with the funding problems they face,” says Missouri School Boards’ Association Executive Director Dr. Carter Ward. “This proposition presents the voters of Missouri the opportunity to voice their opinion on this issue.”

The group says Missouri has the lowest cigarette tax of all states in the nation, and very high smoking and other tobacco product use rates. They say the measure filed.

McCaskill to tour Mo. manufacturing centers

McCaskill to tour Mo. manufacturing centers

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Mo. Sen. Claire McCaskill is scheduled to kick off a manufacturing jobs tour.

She is scheduled to visit industry in Perryville, Jackson and Sikeston on Monday, Aug. 8.

McCaskill will tour Sabereline, Proctor and Gamble and Alan Wire Company with owners, managers and employees.

According to a press release, the senator is looking for new ways to support local businesses and encourage job growth creation.

Planning and Economic Development Commision to hear presentations

PERRYVILLE, MO (KFVS) - The Southeast Missouri Regional Planning and Economic Development Commission will meet on Jun 28 at 2 p.m. in Perryville to hear several presentations on topics from broadband to sewer improvements.

The commission will hear a presentation on broadband service in the commission’s offices at 1 West St. Joseph Street in Perryville.

The City of Annapolis has given the commission a signed contract to administer a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) providing funds for sewer improvements in the city.

Many applications are on the agenda for public notices, including applications from Southeast Missouri State University for research grants to engineering majors, training for rural business hit by natural disasters in Southeast Missouri, and from Perry County to the U. S.
