PERRYVILLE, MO (KFVS) - Insanity has taken over Perryville High School.
That's the Insanity Workout, a high-intensity interval training program that Coach David Mirly and his physical education students have been following for the last few weeks.
"This is pretty intense," said Coach Mirly, who works out with his students every day.
They use the Insanity 60-Day Workout series of DVDs featuring trainer Shaun T.
"These sessions have us doing long bursts of intense workout, with a few short periods of rest in between," Mirly said. "The purpose behind this is to have your body working at its maximum capacity for as long as possible."
Insanity isn't for the faint of heart. The warm-up routine has even the most fit among the class sweating and panting with exertion. Mirly, who is doing the Insanity workout with his varsity volleyball squad, is doing it twice a day on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and says he feels it.
"It's not a low-impact workout, so my old knees are feeling it," he laughed.
Coach Art Dickison said that this workout is great for school classes because it requires no equipment.
"They are doing all of this with just their bodies for resistance," he said. "It's a difficult workout, but it pays off pretty quickly."
Student Anna Huskey said that she keeps up throughout the program during each 50-minute class period. "But I don't like it," she said. "It's hard!"
Addie Schindler echoed that sentiment.
"I'm not quitting, because I want an A in class," she said. "But this is insane."
